Venice seen from above

I read somewhere that Venice seen from a plane looks like a phoenix. Well, I didn’t get to see it from such a great height to confirm this comparison, but I would say that from the 97 meters high San Marco Bell Tower, the view is impressive. When you look up from the bottom of the tower, you can barely see the top and it’s as if you wouldn’t have the courage to climb all the way up there. But once you’ve made up your mind and taken that step, there’s no room for regrets (just don’t suffer from altitude sickness).

Venice from high above is a delirious spectacle that lures you in like a drug and it’s as if you want to stay up there forever, as you’d still never get bored of admiring real paintings in motion.

Short history. The Bell Tower of San Marco (or it’s also called the Tower of San Marco) I would say was first built in the 9th century and is 97 metres high. Basically the tallest structure in Venice, it offers visitors breathtaking views of the dome of the Basilica of San Marco, the lagoon, the neighbouring islands and the red roofs or domes of Venice’s churches. When the skies are clear, you can even see the snow-capped peaks of the Dolomites but, strangely enough, no canals can be seen from here.

The tower unexpectedly collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt exactly as before, and even managed to save one of the five historic bells, which still work today.

The top of the tower can be reached by elevator, the adult ticket costs €8/person.
