March, 2013. It was a beautiful day in Vigevano when a friend of mine called me and asked me to accompany her on a day trip to Lugano.
Arriving in Lugano the disappointment was the weather outside. In Lugano it was cloudy and even drizzled. But even so that day was wonderful.
In a nutshell. Lugano is a small town in southeastern Switzerland, right on the border with Italy. The town is situated on the shores of the lake of the same name, also called Lake Ceresio because of the multitude of cherry trees on its shores, and has a predominantly Lombardy character. Most of the inhabitants speak Italian.
Notable buildings include the Romanesque cathedral of St Lawrence (San Lorenzo) from the second half of the 11th century and the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli (Santa Maria of the Angels) with its famous fresco of the Passion of Christ by Bernardino Luini.
The Lombard-style buildings, museums, sunny climate, mountains and nearby lake show that Lugano combines the advantages of a cosmopolitan city with the features of a small, provincial town.
Lugano is also known for being an important financial centre, with one of the largest banks in Switzerland.
Lugano was founded in the 19th century, and over the years has become a popular attraction for tourists from all over the world. The city has had an interesting and diverse history that has included Italian and Swiss influences. Over time, Lugano has become an important commercial, financial and cultural centre, and today it is one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist destinations.
Lugano is also a major shopping centre, with numerous fashion shops and boutiques offering high-quality products. The city is also famous for its gastronomy, with restaurants offering a variety of dishes, from traditional Swiss dishes to Italian specialities.
