Val di Mello: my haven of tranquillity in the heart of the Alps

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the chaos of the city and the hustle and bustle of everyday life? If your answer is yes, then Val di Mello is the destination for you. Tucked away among the towering peaks of the Rhaetian Alps, this unspoilt valley offers an ideal retreat for those who want to disconnect from their daily routine and immerse themselves in the wild beauty of nature.

Where is Val di Mello

Val di Mello is located in Lombardy, in the province of Sondrio, and is easily accessible from Milan by car or train.

  • By car, you can take the A9 to Lecco and then the SS36 to Morbegno. From Morbegno, continue towards Sondrio and then take the SS38 which leads to Val Masino. From here, follow the signs for Val di Mello.
  • By train, you can take the train from Milano Centrale to Tirano and then connect to Sondrio. From Sondrio, take the STT buses to Val Masino.

How to get to Val di Mello

Once in Val Masino, you can reach Val di Mello on foot or by bus. The path leading to the valley is well signposted and about 4 km long. The trail is immersed in a pristine forest and offers splendid views of the surrounding mountains.

If you take the bus from Sondrio you can reach the Piani di Mello dam. From here, a short walk will take you to the valley entrance.

 

Where to park in Val di Mello

If you decide to drive to Val di Mello, you can park in the Piani di Mello car park, about 2 km from the entrance to the valley. There is a charge for parking and the cost varies depending on the time of year.

Lake Val di Mello

One of the most iconic places in Val di Mello is Lake Val di Mello, a glacial lake basin surrounded by flourishing meadows and imposing mountains. The lake is an ideal place to relax, picnic or simply enjoy the tranquillity of nature.

Refuges in Val di Mello

If you want to spend several days in Val di Mello, you can stay in one of the many huts in the valley. The refuges offer warm hospitality and excellent typical cuisine.

Among the most popular refuges are the Bietti Refuge, the Omio Refuge and the Giannetta Refuge.

What to do in Val di Mello

Val di Mello offers a wide range of activities for all tastes. Hiking enthusiasts will be able to try their hand on trails of varying difficulty, while rock climbers will find rock faces of all levels. For those who prefer a more relaxing activity, there are several options for picnicking, sunbathing or simply enjoying the tranquillity of nature.
