Discover Lake Como: Bellano and Varenna, two Destinations to Visit

When it comes to a relaxing and adventurous getaway, Bellano and Varenna are destinations not to be missed. With their natural beauty and the tranquillity that envelops the entire landscape, Bellano and Varenna offer a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. I recount my experience in this picturesque place in the hope that it will inspire you to visit this hidden gem.

How to get to Bellano?

Bellano is about 1 hour’s drive from Milan and can be easily reached on national road 36. However, if you prefer an alternative you can take the train to enjoy the view without the stress. Once in Varenna, you can choose to continue your journey by boat, an equally enjoyable and evocative option that will allow you to admire Lake Como from a unique perspective..

Orrido di Bellano: A masterpiece of nature

The first stop on our trip was Orrido di Bellano. This gorge is a wonder of nature, carved by the Pioverna stream, forming a narrow canyon over time. The hiking trail is well signposted and will lead you through a series of walkways and tunnels, immersing you in a unique and evocative atmosphere. The roar of the water and the steep rock walls create an extraordinary spectacle.

We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a light jacket as the weather can be cool even in summer.

Bellano: An adventurous journey through the Grigne cliffs

After admiring Orrido, we took a walk through the beautiful village of Bellano. The narrow cobbled streets, flower-filled balconies and cosy atmosphere instantly won me over. You can stroll leisurely along the lakeside promenade, enjoy a coffee in one of the picturesque piazzas or stroll through the narrow streets to discover hidden corners with a special charm.

Don’t forget to try the local dishes in one of the typical restaurants: polenta, lake fish and local cheeses are just some of the delicacies you can enjoy.

Varenna: Exploring the timeless beauty of Varenna

We spent the afternoon in Varenna, a charming town on the shores of Lake Como. Here too, the charm of the lake and its shores will enchant you. I recommend a visit to Villa Monastero, a villa overlooking the lake and surrounded by a beautiful botanical garden.

If you like hiking and still have time to spare, don’t miss the opportunity to take a short hike on the Sentiero del Viandante. This ancient trail, which links villages along the lake, offers breathtaking views and a true immersion in the natural beauty of the area.

When the sun went down, I left Bellano and Varenna, but I keep with me the memory of this unforgettable day. That feeling of peace and serenity, the untouched beauty of nature and the welcoming atmosphere of these places have left their mark on my heart.

If you are thinking of visiting Bellano, don’t hesitate to do so! This destination will give you a day of discovery and relaxation. Whether you love nature, art or good food, Lake Como will win you over with its authenticity and timeless beauty.

Have a good trip!
