ELBA TRIPS: Villa Mulini- Napoleon’s garden

At the back of the Villa Mulini is a huge garden with a view of the sea. The garden, full of greenery contrasting with the blue of the sea and sky, looks like a real paradise, through which Napoleon walked in 1814.

I read somewhere that the great emperor loved gardening very much, and this garden came to life thanks to his involvement. Before Napoleon came to Portoferraio, there were several Italian gardens behind the Mulini villa, which Napoleon later put together and thus created one huge garden. He dedicated himself personally to planting various trees and flowers.

Napoleon’s Museum – Vila Mulini

Today the garden that was so precious to Napoleon is suffering greatly. At the time of my visit I noticed that it is more of an empty space, devoid of any value: with few plants and many weeds. I don’t know if it is like this all the time or if I just caught the wrong time of year.

Despite all this, the garden of the Villa Mulini with its Parisian features still manages to load you up with its historical weight. It’s a space with an extraordinary view of the sea, a romantic retreat for those in love or those who want a moment of solitude under the sea breeze.
